DiⒶgnostic: Tracing Diatopic Variation in a Corpus of Old Irish
Principal Investigator: Professor David Stifter
The DiⒶgnostic project, funded by an Advanced Laureate Award from Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland (project ID IRCLA/2023/2124; 2023–2027), aims at developing a new and more sophisticated corpus-based methodology to investigate the question if and to what extent Old Irish (7th–9th centuries) was internally differentiated by linguistic variation, be it diatopic or diastratic, and in what way this variation is reflected in the extant textual sources. A practical output of the project will be the revision and technical overhaul of the existing CorPH database (Corpus PalaeoHibernicum), and making it regionally more diversified by adding new texts from different parts of medieval Ireland.
