Literature, Language and Culture
Irish language scholarship in Maynooth has its roots in the late 18th century while being firmly focussed on the contemporary and future situation of the language. The Dept. of Nua-Ghaeilge’s annual publications Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad and Léachtaí Cholm Cille create a critical space within which the intellectual depth and scope of the language is continually being expanded. Similarly, the academic publisher managed by the department, An Sagart, brings a steady stream of new publications from initial idea to print. Under the heading Literature, Language and Culture, our research strength encompasses a broad field of subjects – literary and manuscript studies, textual scholarship, creative writing, the oral tradition, linguistics, applied linguistics, dialectology and sociolinguistics, lexicography, cultural studies and place name studies among others.
